for use by students and others in the community who cannot afford those tools. | |
| Distribution | |
| We have distributed over 2030 computers to families of students of all grade levels, including pre-school and higher education of both public and private schools in Bartholomew County. We have used volunteers from our partners and the high schools to refurbish the computers we recycle. Students from an interdisciplinary program and a special education transition program at the high school level used the Tech ReConnect Center, and the donated computers, as a technology learning lab. | |
| Parent Survey | |
| Our survey found that almost 80% of the children whose families received computers from us were using them and the Internet connection to complete the assignments at home. Over 60% of the families visit their teachers' web sites to get important information. (Teachers from pre-school and higher education may not have had a web site.) Nearly 100% of the parents also used the computer and indicated that they were more comfortable with them. Parents requested more opportunities to learn to be better computer users. | |
| Teacher Survey | |
| One hundred seventy-one teachers created and updated web sites and used e-mail routinely to communicate with parents. As one might expect, contacts via websites and e-mail increased. Teachers also reported that they, and their students, use technology more routinely. Survey results indicated that computers provide important support for school projects, an incentive to graduate, and the skills necessary to qualify for higher education. | |
